Developing a bio-inspired sensor for an autonomous mode of transport

Overcoming the technological barriers blocking a mobility & IoT consortium through biomimicry

Context

Bionnov was involved in a consortium of leading players in their sectors — mobility, artificial intelligence, IoT, 5G — working on the automation of a mode of public transport.

Bionnov's mission was to identify bio-inspired solutions to address blocking technological problems: color detection in hostile environments, long-distance obstacle detection, and communication in white zones.

Goals
  • Evaluate the eligibility of a large number of use cases for biomimetic R&D processes

  • Target and prioritize topics according to their strategic importance to the consortium

  • To propose preliminary biomimetic concepts and a detailed roadmap to overcome technological barriers

Key topics explored
  • Color detection in harsh environments with maximum reliability

  • Long-range obstacle detection

  • Communication in a white zone (without network)

Customer

Achievements

  • Upstream analysis by Bionnov: evaluation of the eligibility of 56 use cases for biomimetic R&D processes, identification of an initial list of pre-concepts
  •  Intervention with the consortium teams: prioritization according to strategic importance, ideation of a second set of concepts, estimation of added value compared to the state of the art
  •  Evaluation of the industrial relevance of the selected pre-concepts: feasibility, resources, innovation and industrialization timeline, compatibility with existing technological building blocks

Deliverables

  • 8 concepts of convincing resolution on the 2 key subjects of the study

  • Proposed study to create a demonstrator for each of the 3 most relevant concepts

  • Complete documentation of the 13 pre-concepts identified during the study
